One of my favorite things about good German food is not only that it is freakin delicious, but that it's food that warms you up... heart and soul (literally!). Soups and stews are staples in German cuisine and here are my top 4 German foods that are sure to warm you up on a cold winter day!

#4 - Goulash or Goulashsuppe (Gulasch or Gulaschsuppe): This Hungarian favorite is also common in Germany and German restaurants here in the US. Typically a beef based stew, heavy on the paprika and sometimes with a bit of a kick, this bowl of yumminess can be served with boiled potatoes, spaetzle or just as is. Here is a recipe for Goulash from Quick German Recipes and here is one for Goulashsuppe from Dirndl Kitchen.

#3 - Paprikash: Mmmmm Paaaaaprikash... just saying the word makes me smile with anticipation of warmth. Whether it's a creamy chicken paprikash or a spicy fish paprikash this (again traditionally Hungarian and Slovenian staple) soupy stew is perfect on a cold winter day. Some may argue that this isn't a German food, so it must be my Donauschwaben roots that draw me to this dish. Here are a few recipes to try for paprikash -> Chicken Paprikash  Fish Paprikash Vegetable Paprikash

#2 - Liver Dumpling Soup (Leberknödelsuppe): Nothing warms the soul quite like balls of puréed liver, onion, parsley and breadcrumbs bobbing in a delicious beef broth. Maybe it's just me, but this is my favorite soup of all time and I'm so excited to proclaim that I have made it successfully! My mother-in-law taught me how when they were in town a few weeks ago and I cannot wait to make it again. I was surprised to learn how simple the recipe was. I mean... if I can do it... so can you! Here is a recipe for leberknödelsuppe from One Acre Vintage Homestead to try.

#1 - Rouladen: Is there anyone who can disagree that beef, onions, bacon, gravy and a pickle make a delicious combo? Ok... some people are not a fan of the pickle, but I think that is the part that make the classic Beef Rouladen so fantastic. This dish served with fresh spaetzle and red cabbage or mashed potatoes and sautéed veggies, warms me up just thinking about it! Here is a traditional Rouladen recipe from Quick German Recipes.

Alrighty, so those are my top 4 "German" foods that are perfect to warm you up on a cold winter day.
